As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, society has not accommodated individuals with disabilities in the area of recreation, however, I have discovered a wonderful website that provides adaptations to all indoor/outdoors activities so that individuals with disabilities can participate just like anyone else. The website is entitled, “Access to Recreation, Inc”. This website is phenomenal and its goal is to “provide our customers with products that give them the ability to enjoy activities that they once thought impossible.” The site provides adaptive golfing equipment for those who use wheelchairs for transportation, provides adaptive bowling equipment, swimming pool equipment, and much more.

Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteThis blog was very helpful. I have a nephew that is mentally retarded unfortunately and I often feel as though he's left out when all the other kids are playing. I often ask if he gets to particapate at school and they always tell me yes but during the summer and all they don't have anything for him to do. I will definitely pass on this information to give her ideas like gardening and more recreational ideas that will maybe help get him more involved. I think you did a really good job on this blog and it will definitely reach a lot of parents and educators that are needing new ideas. Thanks Angelica
Thanks Angelica. You are very right in your thoughts. It is sad to see that so many individuals with disabilities do not have the opportunity to share in fun activities and most of society have their eyes shut to the whole situation. I hope this will help your nephew in finding fun activities he can fully participate in!
